Sandringham Hotel Restaurant, Sandringham, VictoriaWhere is it?Occupying the block between Bay Road and Beach Road and stretching up to Melrose Street in the commercial centre, and just two minutes walk from end of the Sandringham Metro line – 40 minutes from Flinders Street – the address of the Sandy restaurant and associated hotel says it all; beach-side with a great view across Port Philips. What did we find? The restaurant’s on the first floor with the pub downstairs and, when the weather’s on your side, it provides seating al fresco. In April you look through plastic sheeting to capture those seascape views and the bandstand, esplanade walks and open park between Beach Road and the shallow cliffs that front the beach; they remind you of the quieter and more relaxed beach-side suburb that once reflected early 20th century Melbourne – before the private car dominated. Beach Road is a busy race track.Check out those reviews from TripAdvisor and others, and you’d never get to visit what is, in effect, simply a budget-cost eatery providing a range of typical meals feeding mainly local families. We’ve eaten there half-dozen times during the past three years – and it hasn’t changed much over that period. ‘Popular’ is a key word; ‘value for money’ another. The restaurant was half full by 6.00 of the evening of our meal – mates, couples, mums, dads & those kids. You check out the menu and pay at reception, collect your table marker and find that preferred seat. We sat outside across from where a birthday party for family and friends was underway. Boisterous, noisy and friendly – and not just the table – but typical of the restaurant. Buy your drinks at the bar. So, it was a partly-serviced table restaurant. What did we like?Good value for money. Meals of the day were chalked on to a board; the `a la carte menu provided mains for A$20-30/plate. You could order ‘single’ or ‘double’, depending upon appetite (with prices adjusted accordingly). Seniors were provided with a separate menu/price listing (averaging A$12/plate), but you could also order ‘seniors’ from the main menu at discounted prices.Notwithstanding lower cost meals, seniors were also provided with a A$2 discount card that could be put towards the costs of those drinks; small cider & glass of Chardonnay cost A$13; A$9 if you could present discount cards. What could have been better? We chose ‘fish&chips’ that came with a salad on the side. It took around 15 minutes to come –presentation was mixed, salad was basic, fish had been plonked on top of the chips. For all that the fish was tasty, chips sufficient, salad like mum used to make.Oh, and another point to note; there was a power blackout in the neighbourhood during our meal – lasted for the duration of the meal/stopover. Couldn’t see what we were eating. There were emergency lights in the main restaurant, but not on the veranda. Service did not extend to those essential candles/emergency lights. Fortunately, most people carry smart phones these days.Would we eat there again? Sure; can’t beat that walk along the front followed by a meal with a view at the prices offered.Peter Steele27April2016

To say this place was Average is actually a compliment.....It is NOT a place to have a relaxing meal. ....No ambiance.. ...but plenty of noise...and screaming kids...The food is very disappointing..... even for Pub food .......Chcken Pama......bland ... unappetizing.... served with cold soggy "chips" ... and poor excuse for a Garden Salad.... definitely not worth the $25 ...! Avoid...

The food is standard pub grub. It can be variable being the kind of place where the chef may not stay for too long. It's strength is the views from the balcony and an indoor playground for small kids.Pricey for what it is. For a little but more money you can have significantly better food.

The noise level was unbelievable, kids crying, kids jumping and thumping in the play area, there was a live band in the room next to us. It was so load that we couldn't hear normal talking. The food was pub food, not great quality but too expensive for what's the we got. I will not be coming back. You have to line up to ; order; get a drink; or pay. Great place to watch the sun sink into the sea. Don't come here unless you have 8 year old kids.

The food was pretty bad, Service not good. Noisy. It was a bad experience over all. I wouldn't recommend it at all. If you want a view of the Bay take a picnic lunch and sit on the grass.

we chose to eat here after viewing their website. When we went to order several " current" website offers, we were told that they had finished over a week ago! Not good enough. My partner ordered the Roast of the day. It was ok ... But he was looking forward to the roast veg, only to find that he got potatoes in their jackets.I ordered fish, which was well cooked. BUT .... it was meant to come with a orange fennel salad. Instead I got a heavily dressed pile of rocket, with a few slices of fennel, and I had to search to find a few tiny pieces of orange.I would never recommend this place to anyone!

Local residents, and three of us visited for an evening meal. We were seated but had to ask for a menu. Several menu's had to go and ask for The Seniors Menu and The Nightly Specials. All seemed rather disorganised. We ordered our meals and went to the bar for drinks. My Senior's meal of roast lamb was OK but went cold very quickly. Friend who ordered a Chef's Special enjoyed her meal. The other Senior meal, lambs fry, was totally inedible. We should have sent it back but my friend did not want to. It looked like a piece of carpet! We will NOT return!

Four of us ordered the Seafood Basket for lunch as it sounded great on the Chef;s "specials of the day" menu. Unfortunately when it came out it was plainly obvious that the oil they had fried the chips and seafood in was clearly in need of changing (probably several days ago) and the calamari rings and prawns were the darkest possible shade of brown and quite stiff and hard. The fish was certainly no better and the chips were luke warm at best. I have been to this establishment a number of times over the years but l won't be back.
